American Pitbull Terrier

The Pitbull is a popular dog in the Terrier dog breed category. Pitbulls, although they get a bad reputation, in the right hands can be a loving and caring dog with a huge personality. Pitbulls are short haired dogs that do not shed, making grooming easy and low maintenance. These dogs have a muscular build, a large strong head and jaw, and come in a variety of coats and colors. The Pitbull is considered a medium sized dog, with a lifespan of between 8-15 years. Pitbull size can vary from 18-21 inches for males and 35-60 pounds. Female Pitbulls tend to stand between 17-20 inches and weigh between 30-50 pounds.

Do Pitbulls Shed?

Pitbulls do shed consistently and year round. Because they do not have a double coat, they do not experience the “blown coat” event whenever seasons change. Brushing once a week can keep shedding at a minimum for your furry friend, and shedding with this breed is much less intense than other dog breeds.

Pitbull Grooming

The American Pitbull Terrier does not need to be professionally groomed, and regular brushing and basic grooming such as nail filing and bathing is all that needs to be done for this low-maintenance grooming dog breed.

Are Pitbulls Easy To Train?

Pitbulls are relatively easy dogs to train, as they are intelligent dogs that form strong bonds with their owners. Pitbulls, however kind and gentle, have historically been bred for protection, so early socialization is important with this dog breed. With the stigma surrounding the American Pitbull Terrier, it is recommended that proper socialization is performed early and efficiently with both dogs and humans.

Pitbull Personality

While the pitbull is known for aggression, these dogs can actually be sweet, friendly, and large personality dogs when trained and socialized correctly. Pitbulls, while they can be stubborn dogs, are also known for their clownish, friendly, strong willed, intelligent, affectionate, gentle, courageous, loyal, and obedient personalities. Pitbulls, like many dog breeds, love to please their owners and form a strong bond with them. Pitbulls should be owned by someone who is ready and willing to put in the work of socializing and training these dogs, and if that happens they can be an amazing companion that is ready to please, friendly, and passionate about their owners. Pitbulls are known for being “clowns”, and this large personality dog will have you laughing for years to come with their funny antics and clownish personalities.

Pitbull Health

Pitbulls, often due to over breeding for physical characteristics, have a variety of common health problems that potential owners should be prepared to deal with. A common issue for pitbulls is skin conditions caused by either allergies, or mange. Due to the pitbulls short coat, these dogs suffer from skin conditions more than other dog breeds might suffer. In addition to this, pitbulls can suffer from hip dysplasia, degenerative diseases, and kneecap dislocation.
